Use of Our Kilns - terms and conditions

PLEASE NOTE:
- We are no longer firing BRT Clay. Please do not mix it into other clays. It is damaging for our kilns and shelves.
- We are no longer firing 'burn outs'.

Every ceramic kiln firing is essentially an experiment. Our firings are priced to be as affordable as possible to encourage exploration of materials. Charges for firings are set by Kil.n.it and are non-negotiable. Pricing is listed on our booking website and posted in the kiln room.  You do not need to be an inducted member to participate in firings.

All works submitted for firing must be accompanied by the online firing form, which is to be completed accurately as a declaration of appropriateness for the selected firing and is subject to the following terms and conditions:

1. Kil.n.it will take all care but no responsibility for loss or damage and reserves the right to refuse any item which we feel may cause problems in the kilns or to neighbouring works in kilns.

2. Firings must be booked and paid for in advance through our website. Priority will be given to paid quarter, half and whole spaces on all occasions. In the case of Gaps, they should also be paid for in advance and are costed at minimum $5 per piece (see size chart below). However, they will only be included if space permits.

3. in the case of overbooking or under-booking kiln space needed for works fired; it is at the Technician's discretion to include surplus pieces, which may incur further charges. Missed bookings are non-refundable, however moving bookings is possible with 48hr weekday notice and is subject to availability.

4. Works must be ready and delivered (at the latest) by 11am  on the day of firing as indicated by the booking process; drop off earlier is ideal. Delivered works are to be placed on the "After Hours - Drop off works" shelves in the right cage locations signalled on site.

5. All firings will be packed and operated by our technicians and will only be fired when a kiln is appropriately full. If a kiln is not booked beyond half capacity, alternative smaller kilns will be used. If work is needed urgently, the whole kiln space can be hired at the whole kiln load price.

6. You must supply specific details of the clay and / or glazes used with your works on the online firing form, acknowledging that your works are ready for firing. If this form is incomplete or inaccurate, we have the right to refuse service without refund or rescheduling.
eg.
base and 5mm from the base is free from glaze,
or
a
hand mixed glaze has been approved by staff and surpassed testing stages.
Your booking represents a declaration that the piece is ready for the selected firing.

7. Reasonable preparation of works before a glaze firing is required and the provision of setters is the responsibility of the artist. If unsure about preparation for your piece/s, contact our staff to learn of recommended preparations before your selected firing.

8. All works, boards and/or boxes must be clearly labelled with:
·            Name
·            Date
·            Firing Type / temp / kiln
·            Date of firing
Or else may not be returned to you. These labels imperative for technician identification.

9. It is recommended where work is fragile or extremely heavy (more than 10kg) that the artist be present for the period of packing to assist with their objects (contact office for times).

10. Temperature adjustments are not possible in communal firings as the settings are chosen to achieve overall kiln firing success for the most common objects and materials. You may hire a whole kiln and negotiate personalised firing cycles.

11. A kiln will not be opened by anyone other than the assigned technician for unpacking when the temperature is below 200 degrees.

12. All work not collected within 2 months will be disposed of.

13. If these rules are not adhered to, for example:
a kiln is self packed
or
the online firing form inaccurately describes materials that resulted in damage on shelves and neighbouring works.

14. Cancellation Policy: we require 5 business days notice to change or cancel any bookings. If circumstances warrant,, this may be less. This will be determined by the discretion of Kil.n.it

In addition to responsibility for the outcome, you will be liable for any damage your work causes to our kilns and / or shelves, and you will be required to pay any repair or replacement costs.

Poor research of materials and the resulting preventable damages implies a disrespectful lack of due dilligence to the communal nature of the firing process, and will be considered a strike in our Anti-bullying policy; please see Code of Conduct. Damages between neighbouring works cannot be mediated by Kil.n.it staff as we strive to take every reasonable measure to protect every artists, makers and clients.

Bisque: $5 ea
Earthenware: $6 ea
Midfire: $7 ea
Stoneware: $8 ea

Gap: A unit of measurement which is approximately the size of an average fist or a mug. All versions depicted in the image above are acceptable single "gaps".

Generally a Gap refers to one object and should be purchased individually per item you wish to be fired.

This size is determined by the most average shelf height and average volume of space that occurs around whole kiln packs.

Any larger or taller will affect the way the kiln is packed and therefore require more space it total (i.e a 1/4 of a kiln) or more "gap" units to be purchased. If you under book the space your "gaps" take up, you will be charged for the additional volume.

Gaps included in firing are subject to the above Use of Our Kilns Terms and Conditions, particularly item 2 and 12.

Single Shelf

Each shelf is H 15cm x W 60cm x D 25cm

1/4 usually includes, but is not limited to, two kiln shelves within the pack.

*If you are conducting an experiment and your surface treatment flashes or jumps onto a neighbours works, you are responsible to either purchase more space in the future OR adjust the treatment to no longer affect local atmosphere.
This accident that affects neighbours requires steps to contain the effect, there will be consultation available on the matter.
