Can I come in and book a last minute space or service?

We generally advise against showing up without a booking. Our workshop has limited space and we can’t always guarantee a place for you. The same applies for our firing/glazing/induction services. All of these must be booked beforehand, as we use the pre-booking system to organise how we operate day-to-day. If you have issues with booking our services, please contact us via email (hello@kil-n-it.com) and we’ll give you a hand!

I want to book Kilnit's service, why isn't the scheduler showing up?

In order for our booking services to function properly, you will need to enable pop-ups on your browser for them to show. This is only a temporary feature and we’re working hard to resolve any issues with our website and online scheduling system.

How do I access Kilnit's classrooms?

Our classroom, used for most of our public programs, is located at Glebe Town Hall at 160 St John's Rd, Glebe 2073. The classroom is roughly 9 minutes on foot from our studios.

The classroom is best accessed from the Mt Vernon Street gate, on the left of Glebe Town Hall's main entrance. The stairway to our classrooms are located immediately behind the black metal gates.

Our classroom and kiln facilities within Glebe Town Hall are both wheelchair accessible. There is an accessibility ramp into the Hall at the Mt Vernon Street gate, where an elevator is located inside immediately to the left behind automated swinging glass doors. The kil.n.it classroom and kiln room are on the basement level.

If you have any specific questions to ask us about accessibility here at kil.n.it please contact us on;

How do I get involved as teacher for Kilnit?

Kil.n.it is a collection of studio spaces and opportunities all rolled into one.

If you have a unique class idea and are happy to work towards making it a reality - lets chat about how to do it. Keep in mind, kil.n.it is here for artists and those in creative industries and want to celebrate and promote all aspects of the profecccreative process

First Step:  email hello@kil-n-it.com with your idea and sus out to when you ideal timeframe would be to run the class. Pictures of previous works or classworks are ideal at this stage.

Second: work as many details of your proposed class you can think of, i.e:
  • class content
  • weekly activity breakdown
  • budget of materials
  • firing requirements

Third: if the plan looks feasible amongst our classes and events program, it is time to meet and plan out how to put it all in action!

Awesome!

What is 1/4 Kiln?

1/4 Kiln is what we call the space of two shelves in the big kiln. Each shelf is approximately 60cmx25cm, meaning 1/4 kiln is approximately 60x50cm. We allow roughly 15cm in height. if your piece is taller than 15cm, just make sure to book space that compensates for the extra height. Remember, in bisque we can stack where applicable and we can fit more in, however in glaze every work must have space around it. Keep that in mind when booking!

Can air-dry clay be fired in the kiln?

No they cannot! Air-dry clays are often formulated with natural additives such as cornstarch to make them hard when dry. These materials would not bode well in a Kiln and your work would be ruined.

Can you tell what temperature to fire my clay by looking at it?

No you cannot. More often than not, you cannot tell what temperature to fire your clay by looking at it. Please refer to the packet your clay came to see if it is earthenware, mid fire, or stoneware. We need to be 100% positive what clay it is before we put it in the kiln or otherwise your work might melt!

Do all types of clay go in the same bisque firing together?

Yes they do. The reason for this is that the bisque firing is a low temperature firing (980°C). All clays need to be fired to a low temperature first to transform the object into a porous state for glazing.
It is the glaze firing that matters when it comes to putting the right clay and glaze in the correct temperature.

Can I put any glaze on my work?

No. Please make sure you have the correct glaze for the clay you are using.
ie. Stoneware clay used stoneware glaze.
If you use the wrong glaze for the temperature you are firing at, the glaze will either under-fired or it will melt and run off your piece and ruin shelves or other people's work!
