Ceramics is a big topic, practice of art and science.
But really, all you need to do is:
You must >
> know your clay temperature.
> make your things
>be careful to dry things evenly until clay is pale (4 days approximately)
> If the clay is thicker than your thump, allow more than a week to dry.
Optional > Apply coloured slips onto clay
> Bisque fire your works (strengthens pieces, tried and true)
> wait for the works to cool,
> Glaze your works (for best results: with glazes that match clay type)
> wipe away glaze from base + 5mm up of work (imagine putting icing on the base of a cake, then putting it in the oven again... nope. )
> Glaze fire your works.
> collect when cool.
Kil.n.it is unique in it’s pricing of their kiln space – it’s primarily by occupied space, not weight. Any booking of the “kil.n.it studios 420L kiln” is approximately two shelves that span 60cm wide x 25cm deep and can be upto a total height of 40 cm. If you are unsure about the space you should book, try placing your objects in an outlined space matching the measurements.
This measurement is a guide and fluctuates dependant upon the objects, for example flat objects like plates require and use more shelves but still allow height for other peoples works and so do not impinge on the total pack. Another factor that affects the measuring guide is that Glaze firing works requires a clear 2cm space around each glazed object when placed in kiln to allow for heat and stop objects joining during firing.
These images are if the inside of the communal kiln, after one year of use. one Quarter of a kiln is difficult to visualise, but if you imagine this area filled with wine bottles, it is approximately the capacity of the 1/4 kiln. Keeping space for props and allowing for the use of 2-3 shelves in your 1/4, it get easier to imagine how much to book. these wine bottles are 35cm tall, perfect as a measure of space to occupy a 1/4 kiln.
*Note that there is a base shelf held up with bricks, this is used for communal glaze firings to help ensure even temperature coverage throughout the kiln.
If you require this to be removed to fit the height of your pieces, we recommend booking into a freestyle firing as opposed to a 1/2 of a kiln.
If your pieces are small (and it happens a lot) we can squeeze them into “Gaps” which is about the size of a regular coffee cup. Clients who book in space online and by the ¼ are given priority above “gaps”.
If your pieces are bigger than the basic size measurements described above, it is recommended that you book in an extra quarter to allow for a special pack. You are welcome to describe your objects in terms of measurements it you have concerns. The biggest we have fired is 60x60x85 which is the total kiln*!
*look at Freestyle Friday firings if your pack is going to take a whole kiln.
If your work breaks or doesn't do what you want it to do (this happens to the best of us) we can only work towards reasonably avoiding it next time.
Our technicians are responsible for a large range of artist works and processes and if you require more specific or extraordinary services (for e.g very large and heavy, or many tiny pieces, or large and flat, or sensitive clays, etc) please discuss in advance of your firing processes to see what is possible.
Unfortunately there is little to reverse the effect of most common ceramic accidents. As the workshop and Studio balcony is a shared space, we do not pursue lines of inquiry to blame anyone, however we do like to work on experimenting and developing ways to make works of all kinds strong and durable (if that is what you are after).
If in the case of breaking another artist's works, please notify staff or the artist directly through their Artist Website contact page. In the nature of good will this might help the karma.
For a while there, we did have half day bookings.
But we have learnt quickly that half days to one person feels like a whole day to others, and it started to become unfair to the lovelies who paid more than they could use. Credits for hours and bookings clashing meant that it all got crazy and the best way was to make it cheaper for everyone in the long run by cutting out time periods, minimising admin costs and worrying about moving bookings along.
So now you get the whole day with whatever start time and end time and you can make your $20 worth it!

They can be ticking time bombs as the water imbued in the clay turns to steam in the Bisque Firing, often exploding or cracking the piece into... pieces.
This affects everyone in the communal firings, however if you have a kiln to yourself then the risk is yours. Solid works require long periods of time to dry, a shortcut can be stabbing the thickness with fine needle tools to make holes in the core masses of clay.

The kil.n.it team work hard to help out their artists whenever they can. Artists who reside in the kil.n.it studios get priority in firings, are promoted through our social media networks and able to have their say in events, classes and kil.n.it activities.
There are perks to being a more permanent studio holder, however we only have 5 studios currently able to house artists. Some Artists share their spaces, but each one undergoes a process of application and curation to allow for a diverse range of minds, skill levels and approaches to collect into our special space, encouraging a co-lab experience but with the privacy of your own space.
